Meta's New AI Ad Tools: Generative Video Ads and In-Chat Checkout

According to Meta, more than 60 percent of the time people spend on Facebook and Instagram goes to video. Yet plenty of ad accounts still run mostly static creative, because video is slow and expensive to produce. That is the gap Meta's new AI advertising tools, unveiled at Advertising Week New York on October 6, 2026, are built to close.
Meta is adding generative video ads built from static images (generally available), a wider rollout of Ads Creative Studio, new audience tools and a direct checkout inside Messenger conversations, currently in testing with Shopify. For performance teams, the bottleneck moves away from producing video and toward disciplined testing, clean customer exclusions and conversion tracking that actually captures purchases made in a chat.
What Meta announced at Advertising Week
The announcement came from Meta's own business newsroom and was covered by trade outlets including Social Media Today, MediaPost and PYMNTS. Pay attention to the status of each feature, because not all of it has reached your ad account yet.
Generative video ads: Advantage+ creative can now turn existing static assets into video ads, which Meta calls generally available. Catalog advertisers also get a beta that converts product images into product videos, open to eligible accounts through Ads Manager and Commerce Manager.
Ads Creative Studio: Launched earlier in 2026 with a limited set of partners, the tool is now rolling out to more advertisers. It uses performance and audience data to show which creative is working, and lets you generate and edit video concepts: the hook, audio, clip length, text overlays, captions and end scene.
AI audience tools: Customer Lifecycle Strategy is available to all advertisers. Flag a campaign as acquisition and Meta recommends excluding existing customers. Meta is also testing a way to exclude whole customer groups with a single Audience Label. AI-enabled audience discovery, where you describe your ideal customer in plain language and Ads Manager suggests Detailed Targeting audiences, is slated for the end of 2026.
Checkout in the conversation: Meta is testing direct checkout with Shopify through Meta Business Agent on Messenger, so people can buy without leaving the chat. Starting this fall, Meta also plans to test checkout inside Meta AI with Adyen, PayPal, Shopify and Stripe. Some blogs already describe purchases inside Instagram DMs and WhatsApp. The trade coverage based on Meta's announcement does not support that: so far only the Messenger and Meta AI tests are confirmed.
On top of that, the AI business assistant in Ads Manager, open to all advertisers since April, is getting more memory, creative insights and, in testing, agentic features that can build campaigns and change targeting and budgets, each subject to your approval. Meta says advertisers who adopt its recommendations typically see 5 percent more conversions at the same cost per conversion. It has not published the method, control group or time frame. Treat that number as a vendor claim, not a benchmark.
Generative video ads: what changes for creative production and testing
Video used to be the most expensive part of a Meta setup. A shoot, an edit and cut-downs for Feed, Stories and Reels can easily cost more than the test budget you planned to validate them with. When a static becomes a video in seconds, that barrier disappears. The problem simply moves: you now have more variants than your budget can test properly.
That is the real risk. Every extra variant splits delivery. With 20 variants and a finite budget, hardly any of them collects enough conversions for a reliable read. The algorithm decides early on thin signals, and you learn very little about the question that matters: which hook, which offer, which visual idea actually sells?
For B2B teams the effect is different. Leads are rarer and pricier, and test cycles run longer. Generative video mainly helps you move a proven static into Reels formats quickly. The constraint is still lead quality, not creative volume. If you optimise for form fills alone, more video will mostly buy you more cheap leads that never close.
Budget and audiences: count new customers as new customers
For ecommerce and D2C brands, Customer Lifecycle Strategy may be the least flashy update and the most valuable one financially. Acquisition campaigns that largely reach existing customers look great in reporting while quietly eating your margin, because many of those buyers would have come back through email, direct traffic or organic search anyway.
Splitting campaigns by lifecycle stage makes your ROAS more honest. It will probably drop at first, as the easy wins fall away. In return, you finally see what a genuinely new customer costs, which is the number you need to defend budget decisions in front of leadership.
Conversion tracking: make chat purchases visible
Checkout inside a conversation shortens the path to purchase, but it also moves it. If an order no longer completes on your website, your pixel may never see it. The coverage of the announcement does not explain how Meta passes these orders back to Shopify or into your reporting, nor how payment data is handled. So before any test, map out where the order lands and how it shows up in your tracking and analytics setup.
Skip that step and a familiar pattern follows: Meta reports rising conversions, your store shows something else, and nobody knows which number is right. Your source of truth should always be revenue in your shop or CRM, not the figure inside the ad account.
In practice: what to do now
1. Test creative with budget discipline. Decide how many variants your budget can actually support. A simple rule of thumb: number of variants = test budget ÷ (target CPA × conversions needed per variant). Worked example: a €6,000 test budget, a €40 target CPA and 30 conversions per variant as a minimum gives 6,000 ÷ (40 × 30) = 5 variants. Anything beyond that dilutes the test.
2. Animate proven winners first. Take your three strongest statics from the last 90 days and let Advantage+ creative generate videos from them. Run static against video with the same offer and copy. That isolates the format effect instead of testing a new idea.
3. Separate the lifecycle stages. Mark acquisition campaigns as such and exclude existing customers. Then track new-customer CAC: ad spend ÷ first-time orders according to your shop system. Compare it with the contribution margin of the first order and with twelve-month customer value.
4. Validate assistant recommendations with a holdout. Before you bank on Meta's 5 percent, test it. Apply the recommendations to one group of campaigns, leave a comparable group untouched, and compare cost per conversion after two to four weeks using shop or CRM data.
5. Only run chat checkout with a measurement plan. If you sell on Shopify and Messenger checkout becomes available to you, start with a few products that have a simple buying decision. Decide upfront how chat orders are counted and which metric wins: click-to-purchase conversion rate or revenue per 1,000 impressions.
Teams that structure their tests within a clear performance marketing strategy and speed up production with AI content creation will get real value from these tools. Teams that just switch on more variants will mostly get more noise.
FAQ
Are Meta's generative video ads available in Europe?
Meta describes video generation from static assets in Advantage+ creative as generally available, but the coverage does not include a country list. Check the Advantage+ creative options on your ad in Ads Manager to see whether the feature is live for your account.
Can I already sell inside WhatsApp or Instagram DMs?
According to trade reports on Meta's announcement, direct checkout is currently being tested in Messenger with Shopify and, from this fall, in Meta AI. New purchase flows in WhatsApp or Instagram DMs are not confirmed there.
How reliable is the 5 percent conversion uplift?
It is a vendor figure with no published methodology. Use it as a hint at most, and confirm it with your own holdout test based on shop or CRM data.
