From post to lead: a LinkedIn funnel for B2B service firms

Many B2B service firms post on LinkedIn regularly, collect likes and comments, and still see hardly any enquiries. The problem is rarely the content. What is missing is the path from post to conversation. Without a funnel, reach stays a vanity metric.

A LinkedIn funnel for B2B service firms connects three stages: attention through organic posts and Thought Leader Ads, interest through retargeting video viewers and engagers, and enquiry through lead gen forms or a concrete call offer. Success is measured not in likes but in qualified conversations per month and cost per opportunity.

Why posts alone rarely bring leads

A good post reaches people who are not buying right now. That is normal. In B2B, only a small share of your audience is actively facing a decision at any given moment. End every post with "get in touch" and you put off the rest without systematically reaching the few who are ready to buy. A funnel solves this by storing interest and picking it up again at the right time.

Stage 1: attention you can measure

Organic posts are the raw material. To be usable in a funnel, they need a goal beyond reach: every post should name a problem your audience has and offer a perspective that leads to your offer. Video has an advantage here, because video viewers can be targeted again later.

If you want to accelerate reach, you can promote strong posts by individuals as Thought Leader Ads. How that works and what it costs is covered in our German-language article on Thought Leader Ads on LinkedIn.

Stage 2: store interest with retargeting

This is where the real leverage sits. LinkedIn has offered engagement remarketing since 2020. According to Search Engine Journal, you can build audiences from video viewers by the share of the video watched, with thresholds from 25 to 100 percent and a lookback of 30 to 365 days. You can also target people who opened or submitted a lead gen form. The report names a minimum size of 300 people for use in targeting.

In practice: anyone who watched 50 percent of your video on a specialist topic receives a deeper piece of content next, such as a checklist or an anonymised example, followed by a call offer. You create a sequence instead of a single touchpoint.

Stage 3: an enquiry without friction

At the end, you need a clear next step with a low barrier. Two options make sense:

  • LinkedIn lead gen form: Pre-filled profile data lowers the barrier. Add one or two qualifying questions, such as company size or budget range, so not every download ends up with sales.
  • A concrete call offer: A 15- or 30-minute slot with a clear benefit, bookable via a calendar, instead of a generic contact form.

Worked example: what the funnel has to deliver

Suppose your retargeting audience includes 3,000 people who watched at least half of one of your videos in the last 90 days. A lead campaign reaches 40 percent of them, or 1,200 people. At a 5 percent form conversion rate, that produces 60 leads. If one in three qualifies, you have 20 conversations. On a 3,000 euro media budget, each qualified conversation costs 150 euros. That number, not the like count, decides whether your LinkedIn funnel works.

Metrics per stage

  • Attention: reach within your target audience, video completions of 50 percent or more, share of decision-makers among people engaging.
  • Interest: size of retargeting audiences, click-through rate on deeper content.
  • Enquiry: form conversion rate, share of qualified leads, cost per conversation and per opportunity.

FAQ

How large does a LinkedIn retargeting audience need to be?

According to Search Engine Journal, the minimum size for engagement audiences from lead gen forms is 300 people. For meaningful campaigns you will need considerably more.

Does the funnel work without an ad budget?

Partly. Organic posts and a clear call offer bring enquiries, but retargeting video viewers and engagers requires paid campaigns.

What content works for stage 2?

Content that deepens the problem and genuinely helps: checklists, worked examples, short how-tos. It should show how you think without selling yet.
