Google Ads AI Max: preview AI-generated ad copy before you launch

For many performance teams, AI Max has felt like flying blind: switch on text customization and Google writes part of your ad copy, but you only find out what actually ran once it shows up in the asset report. A new feature that Google added to its help documentation in early October 2026 changes that sequence: asset previews for text customization, available before you even turn AI Max on.

Google Ads now shows up to 10 AI-generated sample headlines and descriptions for a Search campaign without requiring you to opt into AI Max text customization. The preview is built from your landing page, usually in under 30 seconds, and already respects your text guidelines. Treat it as a mandatory check before every AI Max opt-in: review brand voice, claims and legal statements, tighten your guidelines, and only then activate.

What is new in AI Max text customization?

Google has extended its help page "About text customization in Search campaigns" with a section on asset previews. Search Engine Land covered it on October 8, 2026, and Search Engine Roundtable followed on October 9. According to Google, when a final URL is set, its AI automatically generates up to 10 example headlines and descriptions, and you do not need to opt into text customization to see them. If there is no URL yet, you enter one and select "Preview examples".

The preview sits in the "Asset optimization" section, both when you build a new Search campaign and when you edit an existing one. Supported languages include English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch and Japanese, and examples are available for almost every standard business category except adult content.

One caveat matters: these are samples. Search Engine Land points out that they are not necessarily the exact assets Google will serve. Google says customized text assets are reviewed at least every 48 hours, refreshed when needed, and only served when they are predicted to outperform the copy you uploaded yourself.

Why this matters for your budget

Text customization is one of the levers AI Max uses to capture additional search traffic. The risk so far has been on the brand side. Google draws on your domain, landing page, existing ads and ad group keywords. If your page still shows an expired offer, an overconfident promise or an outdated price, that wording can end up in an ad. For B2B companies with regulated claims, discount rules or tightly scoped services, that is not a cosmetic issue. It is a question of liability and trust.

The preview moves that review to before launch. You see which messages the AI pulls from your landing page before a single euro, dollar or franc is spent. It is also honest feedback on the page itself: if the AI can only produce generic phrases, the problem is rarely Google. It is usually a landing page without a sharp value proposition.

A 15-minute pre-launch check for your team

Run the preview like an approval loop with fixed criteria. A workable routine for AI Max campaigns:

  1. Generate previews: Open Asset optimization in the campaign and generate samples for each important landing page separately.
  2. Check against a claims list: Which statements are allowed in ads and which are not? Common exclusions are guarantees, unproven superlatives, prices and deadlines.
  3. Tighten text guidelines: Google offers text guidelines as a beta feature. You can exclude terms, set a tone and steer away from certain concepts. According to Google, the preview already filters for these rules, and if your guidelines block every possible asset, you are prompted to adjust them.
  4. Fix the source: Whatever the AI gets wrong, correct on the landing page. Google explicitly names accurate website content as a prerequisite.
  5. Activate, then measure: After opting in, monitor quality in the responsive search ad asset report and keep your own headlines in place.

To judge results after launch, you need a clean baseline. Look at cost per qualified lead, not only click-through rate. A simple illustration: if an ad group's CTR rises from 4 to 5 percent but the close rate of its leads drops from 20 to 12 percent, you bought more clicks and sold at a higher cost. That is why lead quality belongs in the evaluation, ideally via imported offline conversions.

What the preview does not solve

The preview shows sample copy, not search terms. The second big variable in AI Max, expansion into additional queries, is untouched by it. That still requires regular reviews of the search terms report and a maintained negative keyword list. Nor does the preview replace monitoring after launch. Google itself recommends continuing to review generated assets once text customization is on.

For teams that have avoided AI Max so far, the takeaway is this: the preview lowers the barrier to entry, it does not reduce the risk to zero. Start with one campaign whose landing pages you know well, set text guidelines from day one and judge the result after two to four weeks based on lead quality. More on steering Search campaigns is on our performance marketing page, and on measuring lead quality under tracking and analytics.

FAQ

Do I have to turn on AI Max to see the preview?

No. According to Google's help documentation, the AI generates samples automatically once a final URL is set. Opting into text customization is not required.

Will Google serve exactly the copy shown in the preview?

Not necessarily. The previews are examples. Google decides on an ongoing basis which customized assets run, reviews them at least every 48 hours and only uses them when they are predicted to perform better.

Which languages are supported?

Google lists English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch and Japanese for asset previews.
